New York commercial collection agency

New York has two very different business economies under one state government. New York City hosts finance, media, fashion, real estate and professional services on a global scale, while upstate cities such as Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany build semiconductors, optics, food products and machinery. Commercial creditors owed money by a New York company need an approach that fits whichever side of that divide the debtor sits on.

Business debt in New York

New York City is the country's largest financial center and a major hub for media, advertising, fashion, real estate, legal and consulting services. Its businesses buy enormous volumes of professional services, technology, construction and hospitality on credit. The Port of New York and New Jersey handles container cargo for the region, and John F. Kennedy International Airport is a major air cargo gateway. Long Island and the Hudson Valley add distribution, health care and manufacturing.

Upstate, the economy has deep manufacturing roots. Rochester is known for optics and imaging, the Albany area has semiconductor fabrication and research, and Buffalo has trade ties with Canada through the Peace Bridge and other crossings into Ontario. Central and western New York produce dairy, apples and wine grapes, and the state is a large yogurt and cheese producer. The New York State Thruway, Interstate 81 and Interstate 87 carry much of the state's freight.

Unpaid business invoices in New York often involve real estate and construction contractors in the city, media and marketing agencies billing corporate clients, and garment industry suppliers dealing with retailer chargebacks. Upstate, cross-border shipping and dairy and food processing generate their own payment disputes.

Where New York collections come from

Construction and real estate services

New York City projects involve many trades and complex payment chains, and disputes over change orders, retainage and delays regularly leave subcontractors and suppliers unpaid.

Media, advertising and creative services

Agencies, production companies and freelancers in Manhattan bill clients on project terms, and disputes over deliverables or budgets frequently lead to unpaid invoices.

Apparel and textile trade

Garment district wholesalers and importers deal with retailer chargebacks, cancelled orders and factoring arrangements that can complicate who owes what to whom.

Cross-border trade and freight

Carriers and brokers moving goods through Buffalo and Champlain border crossings handle shipments between New York and Canada, and unpaid freight and customs fees are common.

Taking a New York debtor to court

In New York, the Supreme Court is the general trial court for larger civil claims, and its Commercial Division handles qualifying business disputes. Civil, city, district and justice courts hear smaller claims, and commercial small claims parts are available to businesses with certain limits. Creditors should verify current thresholds before filing.

We verify the debtor's legal entity before any demand, and if a claim needs to go to court we send you a written recommendation with costs first. How legal collections work.

Frequently asked questions

Can a business use commercial small claims in New York to collect an unpaid invoice?

New York courts outside the Supreme Court offer commercial small claims parts that allow businesses to bring smaller claims against other businesses, with rules about how many claims can be filed and how much can be sought. Those limits change, so creditors should check them before filing. For larger balances, or debtors with assets elsewhere, a demand and negotiated settlement, followed by litigation in the right court, is often the better route.

Can you collect from a New York business if my company is elsewhere?

Yes. We collect from New York businesses for creditors anywhere in the U.S. and abroad. If suit becomes necessary, it is usually filed where the debtor is located, through local counsel and only with your approval.
